It is possible to use a rubric with Assignment activities. A new rubric can be defined for each assignment or rubrics can be saved and re-used for multiple activities. 

Create a Rubric - Pre-setup (Create the Assignment or Workshop)

  1. Navigate to the course and click Turn editing on

  2. Click the Add an Activity or resource link.

  3. Select Assignment/Workshop and click the Add button.

  4. Enter a name and description for the assignment or workshop.

  5. Scroll to the “Grade” section and select Rubric from the “Grading method” drop-down menu.

  6. Click Save and return to course.

Create a Rubric from Scratch- Define the Rubric

  1. Locate the assignment you just created and click Edit > Edit settings.

  2. In your administration block look under Assignment Administration and click Advanced Grading.

  3. Use the drop-down menu to select Rubric.
  4. You should see new options appear below the drop-down menu.  Click Define new grading form from scratch.

  5. Enter a name (required) and description (if desired) for the rubric.

  6. Skip the first "Description" text box.  Scroll to the “Rubric” section and click where it says "Click to edit criterion" to start creating the first of your criteria.  Use the + Add Criterion button to add more.

  7. Click in each level box to the right of the criterion to enter the description for each grading level in the rubric.

  8. By default there are three levels (0, 1, 2). If you desire to add more, click the Add levels button.

  9. Deselect any of the rubric options you do not desire (all are selected by default).

  10. Click Save rubric and make it ready.

  11. Once the rubric is created it can be used with the current assignment. You will be presented with three options: “Edit the form,” “Delete the Form,” or “Publish the form as a new template.” Editing the form will allow you to change/add/remove any of the criterion and/or levels. Deleting the form will remove the rubric. If this is a rubric that you may want to use for another assignment, Publishing the form will allow you and/or others to use the rubric in another activity.

 

Using a Rubric from a Template

  1. Create an Assignment or Workshop.

  2. Click the Edit menu for the newly created activity and then click Edit settings

  3. In your administration block look under Assignment Administration and click Advanced Grading.
  4. Use the drop-down menu to select Rubric.
  5. Click on the box to Create new grading form from a template.  Doing so will bring up a rubric form search page.

  6. On the page you will see a list of published rubrics. There is also an checkbox to include in the search rubrics you have created, but not published.

  7. Once you have located the template you would like to use, click the Use this template button.

  8. Click “Continue”.

  9. You may use the rubric as is or click the Edit this form button to customize the rubric.
