Course description:
At Hampshire we talk about learning by doing. But what are we doing when we learn? This course falls under the umbrella of “critical university studies”—a burgeoning interdisciplinary field that examines the roles and statuses of the university in civic, economic, aesthetic, and ethical life. In this course we will borrow methods from critical university studies to think through the implications and meanings of the university, while, at the same time, adopting tools from queer and trans studies to think about what texts and subjects can be taught, when, under what conditions, and how. We will put critical pressure on the contexts and histories of universities, how “radical” subjects become incorporated into the institution, the impacts of student advocacy, and higher education otherwise. Finally, we will focus on Hampshire itself—its histories, its present, and its futures.
