Our work in this tutorial will be more or less equally divided between reading plays and writing a one-act. The plays we read, which will include a wide variety of playwrights, will inform our exercise work even as they deepen and extend our sense of drama as a form. We will be paying particular attention to the way character is revealed through dialogue, ways to unfold exposition, segmentation of dramatic action, and how dialogue is shaped by character activity.
You will be seeing three shows over the course of the semester, and writing an evaluative paper on each one. I'll give you more details about the paper as we get closer. You can include "Splendor," which we are seeing in Boston on November 14, if you wish, in the list of three. I suggest the following, all of which will be in Emily Dickinson Hall:
Thursday October 18-20 and 24-26: Eshe Shukura's show entitled "Fat, Black and Ugly."
November 22-23: New Play Festival.
December 3-8 "How I Learned to Drive" by Paula Vogel.
