Description: Goal: To provide students with immersion and training in the various methods of raising funds to accomplish their aspirations of making the world a better place. This one-week workshop will start by covering the basic principles of drafting a compelling and persuasive case statement and outlining a development plan, including objectives, strategy, and anticipated results. Students will select a project to work with based on their academic or personal interests. The workshop will then cover ways to research potential sources of funding and, using the selected project, draft a letter of inquiry and proposal to a targeted donor or foundation. Building off of this core proposal, students will develop either a letter of appeal or a social media fundraising campaign. The workshop will also cover how to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors. Finally, working in teams, students will design a fundraising event and if time allows as a group we will evaluate and strengthen each event. Basic aspects of the IRS tax code and how it affects charitable giving in the United States will be covered.
