Description: The music and rhythms of West Africa, Cuba, the Caribbean, Brazil and New Orleans are part of a larger musical family in the African Diaspora. In this course, we will learn about the cultures, folklore and complex rhythms of these Afro- traditions, tracing them from West Africa to Cuba, the Caribbean, Brazil and New Orleans. This is a performance class; we will prepare music for a final performance. All instruments are welcome, and can be played with the African-based rhythms we will work with. Bring any percussion or music instruments to class each day. There are no prerequisites for this class; musicians and non-musicians are welcome.
