Description: This course will address maternal, newborn and infant health in developing countries with special reference to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia. Attention will be given to the socio-economic factors that impact access to health care during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth. Through a series of case studies, students will review interventions designed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 and the progress and challenges thus far. Further topics include access to family planning and contraceptives use, abortion, maternal and infant nutrition and breastfeeding. We will also examine diseases and conditions such as malaria, anemia, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and their impact on maternal health and well-being in these countries.
