Description: This class is a hands-on exploration of topics in Life Science and Physical Science through the Arts. We will investigate dynamic strategies for teaching biology, earth science, magnets, electricity, weather, and animal adaptations, in public school classrooms and in the community as a means to engage, enhance and inspire learning. Participants will explore theater games and visual arts explorations from the perspective of social and academic learning skills, as well as creative and critical thinking skills, for elementary and middle school youth (2-8 grade). Students will learn strategies for adapting theater games and Enchanted Circle Theater (ECT) creative education templates into dynamic learning activities. There will be opportunities to work with guest teaching artists from ECT, and to visit public school classrooms to assist the teaching artists in an arts integrated lesson. Students will focus on practical teaching strategies and curriculum development toward the development of a science based creative curriculum project of their choice. In addition, students will develop their teaching and facilitation skills and an increased understanding of the impact of arts in education as a dynamic teaching tool. Periodic Lab classes will be included for site visits to the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, Springfield Science Museum, and the Beneski Museum of Natural History.
