The purpose of physics is to understand the fundamental laws that govern how the universe behaves. In this course we will learn how to discover, analyze, and understand these laws as creative scientists. We will focus on classical (Newtonian) physics, which concerns the motion of matter on the comfortably familiar size we reside in between atoms and the universe as a whole. Topics covered will include: concepts such as force, momentum, and energy; physical models of springs, projectiles, and pendulums; and common tools of a physicist such as error analysis and computational simulations. To develop our scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills we will learn how to frame questions about physical phenomena as solvable problems. Students should be comfortable with algebra and trigonometry, and at the minimum have an acquaintance with calculus. This course is well suited for students interested in further study of physics, engineering, mathematics and other sciences. It also satisfies pre-medical and pre-professional requirements. This course satisfies distribution requirements.
