Students gain hands-on experience in the fundamentals of painting by exploring color, composition, various materials, painting surfaces, scales and artistic approaches in this work-intensive studio class. Non-Western cultural perspectives related to painting will be introduced and explored as we'll question habitual ways of seeing and image making. Assignments will include color mixing, landscape, self-portrait, figure painting, experiments with traditional and non traditional painting materials, collaborative painting, conceptual painting, and work inspired by street art and graffiti. Assigned readings, artist research, individual critique, group discussions, slide presentations and film screenings will round out the experience. Every student will be expected to keep a sketchbook and to work 6-8 hours a week outside of class.
